How is your marriage? Is it healthy and thriving? Are you spending several nights a week, even if just for half an hour, talking to your spouse on a deeper level? This means shutting off the television or other modes of distraction, and giving one another your undivided attention.

Are you and your spouse able to communicate about the faith and growing together in virtue? Do you have binding and renewing conversation, aside from recounting daily tasks and talking about the children?

It is recommended that married couples should not only have all this, but as well, they should attend a marriage retreat together at least every five years! Unfortunately, for many of us with young children and family obligations, this is not always a possibility. This 7-Week Marriage Workbook – Your Hand In Mine, Our Hands In His, is meant to help you and your spouse grow together in virtue, and develop the lasting habit of communicating regularly, and on a deeper level with one another.

Each of the 7-Weeks focuses on one of the four Cardinal Virtues and three Theological Virtues, as they apply specifically to marriage. The study includes relevant Scripture study, words of wisdom from the saints and other Theologians, and practical application in everyday married life. The study is meant to encourage both meaningful reflection and helpful dialogue between spouses.

I hope that you and your spouse enjoy this workbook as much as my husband and I, and so many other couples, who have also found it renewing. God bless you on your journey together, and may your holy example renew the face of the earth!

This workbook will definitely challenge you and your partner by inviting you into deeper conversations than you normally have. But the way the questions are structured, these conversations won’t be arguments. You’ll learn a lot about the virtues, a lot about yourself, and a lot about your partner as they reflect on truths that matter so much but get discussed so little. I recommend really clearing out some intentional evening time for this – it would be ideal to do with your partner during Lent. It would also make for a good marriage enrichment group study, or curriculum for a marriage encounter retreat. Wherever you’re coming from – one of the biggest takeaways my spouse and I got from this was just making the time to go deep with each other using God’s word TOGETHER. This is something so basic for a strong marriage, yet so rare to have offered in today’s hectic world. I highly recommend this study to anyone looking to strengthen their marriage.

Having a resource like My Hand in Yours, Our Hands in His has been invaluable in reminding us to take time out of our day each day to continue to cultivate our marriage. With the chaos of life, it can be difficult to carve out that intentional time, but having a workbook like this reminds us to take that time and strengthens both our personal and communal spirituality. I see this being a resource we go back to again and again.

Within each chapter, she offers a definition of the virtue under study, and how it might best be applied within your marriage. Then Cook gives you a series of exercises to partake in that:
    1. Provide Scriptural reference for embracing the virtue
    2. Evaluate the strength of the virtue within your marriage
    3. Identify areas in need of improvement, with the development of action plans for practicing the virtue
Within each chapter, Cook offers you a series of thought-provoking questions, used for discussion. These questions will definitely set you, and your spouse, on the right course toward mastering the virtue under study. She also offers a closing prayer to end each session.
